#9 - Fun in the Sun

This is a really fun place to play in the sun. It's a combination regular fountain and "squirty" fountain. The little squirts come up through the train tracks, and you can see the engine coming out of the tunnel in the distance -- plus the pulses are in time with music. This very creative fountain is on the sidewalk beside my office, and some days I am so tempted to just walk right into it during my lunch break.

Today was incredibly hot and uncomfortable. Late in the afternoon a thunderstorm blew through with some nice breezes and a tiny bit of much needed rain. My Japanese maple was sighing with relief to get this small shower of raindrops.

One has to "believe" that this fragile-looking structure will not just collapse when you walk across it. I don't enjoy walking across it, but hundreds of people do every day. This pedestrian bridge is really quite unique and strangely attractive to look at. The bridge is curved, which doesn't show up in my pic. It spans the Reedy River (shown in my "movement" post) in downtown Greenville and is the focal point of a spectacular park.

#16 - Movement

The movement of the water in the Reedy River through downtown Greenville creates these falls, although, as you can see from my picture, they are drastically diminished by the drought. Even last summer you could not see the rocks under the falls. And I have seen kayakers go over these falls when the river is running high -- not now! BTW, this river runs right beside my office, so I have a lovely view anytime I get a minute to look out the window.

These are the Stone Lake geese having their "yummy" dinner of lush grass. This flock lives in/on/around the 2 lakes in my community and are residents the same as the humans and cats and dogs who live here. Every late afternoon they can be found in someone's yard grazing. I purposely left the bit of the stop sign, sidewalk and road in the picture to show you that these beautiful birds are admired and protected by those of us who are privileged to be allowed to live with them.

This is an anonymous cat which I watched every day while we were at the beach last week. The dock he is on is probably 99 feet long (which is as long as docks are allowed to be) and extends out into the marsh. The "game was on" when kitty would go out onto the dock and carefully and patiently look down into the marsh grass until he spotted his breakfast (or lunch or dinner or snack). Then suddenly he would jump down into the marsh (and I would completely lose sight of him for a minute or two) and then just as quickly he would reappear back up on the dock with legs dangling out of his mouth (crab? frog?). He would walk very calmly and self-assuredly back down the length of the dock and go over to his house to enjoy his fresh catch. What a cat!

This feeder is ostensibly for birds. But this squirrel (and I'm sure it's the same squirrel who is always feeding) contorts himself in every imaginable way to get to the food. Eventually he gets his fill and goes off to nap, and the birds do get to eat. I enjoy watching him every morning almost as much as the birds.

This is the Pawleys Island Chapel. The Chapel stands on marshland donated by Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Porter. Originally built in Georgetown, the building was home to the Pentecostal Holiness Church. The building was dismantled and rebuilt on the Island lot in 1946. The Chapel had extensive renovations in 2005, including new siding, roof, windows, seating, and central heat and air conditioning. The Chapel survived two major hurricanes - Hazel and Hugo. There was severe damage after Hugo, but contributions from hundreds of people and the Pawleys Island Rotary financed its restoration.
